TTY: 1-800-661-8773

Email: PersonalSupportsInformation@gov.bc.ca

The toll-free Personal Supports Information Line is a single access point for information about equipment and assistive devices.  By calling the Information Line, individuals will be provided with information or connected with the government program that provides the particular equipment or assistive device about which the caller is inquiring.  The Information Line will begin with a three-month evaluation phase, which will help the government determine what is working well with the service and what improvements need to be made.  The Information Line is available to all British Columbians and is part of the provincial government’s Disability Strategy, the purpose of which is to build the best system of support in Canada for persons with disabilities, those with special needs and children at risk, and seniors.

Vancouver Island Society of Disabled Artists

The society was founded by Alistair Green & Garry Curry. It was created to show other disabled people the tools that Alistair and Garry have created and how they are used.

Their Mission:

To support persons with disabilities that would like to become professional artists.

To introduce disabled children and newly injured to a user-friendly art studio.

To research and develop new power-assisted equipment that will allow artists to increase their productivity.

To provide individuals with the opportunity to become financially independent.

To support our members by providing a means to demonstrate their artwork in local and national art galleries.

To give a voice to the experience of living with a disability.

Integrated Dance

FREE Opportunity for Individuals with a Mobility Disability

Dance Victoria, the company that brings dance productions like the Royal Winnipeg Ballet or Les ballets Jazz de Montreal to Victoria each year is launching a new initiative called TAILSPIN. Led by dance professional, Lori Hamar, TAILSPIN is being developed as an integrated dance company – integrating able-bodied dancers with those that have a mobility disability. Beginning in September, with accompaniment from a live musician, Lori will lead 12 free two-hour workshops. The workshops will have the side benefit of increasing your range of movement and strength, but ultimately, they will be focused on creating dance pieces for performance. These workshops are suitable for those individuals who want to try something new, have a passion for music and dance, and are willing to explore all possibilities. Lori’s background with integrated dance makes her classes supportive and dynamic. Each disabled dancer will have the opportunity to work in tandem with an able bodied dancer. Classes take place in an accessible hall with wood floors at the Gordon Head Rec Centre.

If you’re interested, please go to www.DanceVictoria.com and click on Community Outreach for more information.
