Hands on Summer Camp Society

Hands On Summer Camp was founded in 1991 by a group of parents who found that their children, who happened to be deaf and hard of hearing, didn’t have the same sport and recreational opportunities as other children. In addition to the obvious fitness benefits, the Camp’s founders believe that sports are a way for deaf children to break down barriers and participate in a larger community.

Since 1991, more than 400 children have received professional instruction in sports, the arts and enjoyed the fun and confidence the camp provides.

Camps are one week in duration and integrate hearing, deaf and hard of hearing children ages 5 to 12. One sport is taught in each camp by professionals in their fields of expertise. Hearing children can get an exciting glimpse into a wonderful language, while deaf and hard of hearing children experience a rare opportunity to participate with ease.

The emphasis is on learning and fun through sign language studies, sports, arts and crafts and other interesting activities. Additional outings include, bowling, picnics, mini golf, Imax, Bug Zoo and much more.

Individual attention is guaranteed with a low counselor-to-camper ratio. All counselors are First Aid Certified. All communication is both signed and spoken as both hearing and hearing impaired staff are employed.
