BC Coalition of People with Disabilities

Umbrella organization that represents people with all disabilities. Operated for and by people with disabilities. Mandate is to raise public and political awareness of issues of concern to people with disabilities; works towards the goal of facilitating the full participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of society and to promote independence. The Advocacy Access Program advocates on behalf of people with disabilities to become aware of their legal rights and entitlements. The AIDS and Disability Action Program is an education program for people with HIV/AIDS, under this program there are two initiatives: 1) the Wellness and Disability Initiative offering health and wellness information in plain language and alternative formats, and the Resource Centre helping people to learn how to live well, prevent illness and manage health ISSUES, AND 2) THE Health Literacy Network linking disability and other community groups, individuals and health care workers to raise awareness and increase access to health information. The Individualized Funding Community Development Project focuses on individual funding and autonomous planning incorporating people with disabilities, disability organizations, family members and their organizations. The Community and Residents Mentors Association Project works with residents and staff of George Pearson Centre providing peer support to prove opportunities for collaboration between people with disabilities and service providers, and to evaluate and reasearch the impact of peer mentoring on quality of life. The Transition Magazine is an informative publication covering a broad range of issues of concern to people with disabilities, their families and caregivers, and professionals in the field.
